I’ll remember that crazy day for the rest of my life.
We were having “issues” with Google, and decided to try our hand at media buying.
After weeks of negotiation, one of the biggest networks online had finally agreed to promote us. These guys were massive players, they could push 50,000 to 100,000 targeted clicks in 24 hours.
The rub was the promo could only happen on the dates I was going to be scuba diving in Fiji. My girlfriend and I had planned a tropical vacation months earlier, and she would kill me if I cancelled.
I really didn’t want to say no to the network, but was scared as hell thinking about how I’d manage a gigantic ad campaign from another country, in a completely different time zone.
That much traffic can easily crash a server, and my reputation was on the line with these guys.
I called the hotel in Fiji to see if they even had Internet. They did, but it was dial-up, and they admitted it was sketchy. I called my tech guy. He was going to be on vacation too, but at least he’d be in the US, and agreed to bring his laptop.
Of course, I could wait 9 more weeks until the ad network had an opening again, or cross my fingers, get on that damn airplane, and hope to hell I could handle everything remotely.
